If you're using Windows Control-Click on the type layer (Apple-click for Mac), this creates a selection around the type. Turn off the type layer using the eye icon, this leaves a selection floating above the photo. Now select the photo layer - now Control-C to copy, then Control-V to paste (Apple-C and Apple-V for Mac). Click on the new layer which is copy of the photo in the selection and choose effect emboss. All of a sudden you get type standing out from the photo. Works a treat.
All the best Dogmandouglas
As an alternative, apply a layer style to the text layer. In the Blending Options section set the Fill Opacity to zero and then set the emboss options of your choice. That way you get the same effect but the text remains editable and can be moved around relative to the background -- great for when you discover a typo at the last minute.
