It sounds as though you've talked yourself into learning VP8. I suspect all that's good about VP8 will more than make up for any hills you encounter in the learning curve. If you are able to pick your own jobs and your own DTP software you are - like most of the rest of of us VP diehards - the perfect Ventura user.
