I didn't know that.

But I think you have missed the point: if human eyes can see your VAT number, then the human possessor of the eyes can copy it to another site that is asking if they have got a VAT number. If it's a genuine European VAT number (they can check that it exists), then they can order any article and get it without paying the VAT, which may exceed 20% of the purchase price without VAT.
