Mike:

Many happy returns of the day! Have you learned Welsh yet?

Many thanks. Had a great day and Audrey gave me a rather lovely antique wooden box. We didn't do anything much but Audrey made a nice meal, we had a bottle of cava, and settled down in front of a log fire to watch the Sopranos.

I'm loath to say that Welsh has beaten me, Michael -- let's just say I've taken a temporary rest from the traumas of learning it...

Default Welsh in Philadelphia Suburbs

When I first moved to Philadelphia, I thought the Welsh place names in the Philadelphia suburbs had something to do with Welsh immigrants back in William Penn's time, but I have learned that these names are actually the result of clever land and speculative housing developers in the 19th century who were promoting there developments in the early railroad commuter suburbs along the "Main Line" of the railroad, in those days the Pennsylvania Railroad and its predecessors. So, Bryn Mawr, Llanarch, and Bala Cynwyd were far more recent names than I first thought.

Mike, Welsh has got to be easier than Mandarin, after all, it does use an alphabet. My wife's attempts to get me to say anything in Cantonese or Mandarin, haven't worked beyond the short phrase, M'goy Ling, and no doubt I have that spelled wrong. Are you trying to learn to speak it, or actually read and write, too?

Both -- reading and writing is probably easier as there's time and opportunity to use a dictionary -- though with the initial letters of words changing so frequently using a dictionary can be pretty time consuming.
