You could try one of the various Live CDs to experiment more perhaps. You can set those to start of in Chinese.
I actually already tried setting Windows to use Chinese but it made no difference. (And then I had to go and reset all the formats for date and time. )

So I concluded it was probably the Chinese font name after all (applications not supporting that) - and "cracked it for one font by "patching" it with an English font name instead of a Chinese one. Samples above!

I'll patch the rest of the set next week ...
