Default New York Times goes left

Referenced from Romanesko/Poynter Online, a New York Observer article about New York Times typography.

Interesting. But the Times is not the first paper to do this, although perhaps not to the same degree.

I wish I had not seen today’s paper before reading about the changes, but they are not particularly shocking.

They need to control rags better if there is to be so much ragged text. It is very rough and ugly, especially in the narrow columns. (I suppose they forbid more than 2 or 3 consecutive hyphenated lines; that would add to the problem).

The long version of the Note to Readers in the paper today — about the sections affected by the changes — is in a Readers Guide at NYT online. Reading it makes me wonder if they need to have so much opinion; scarcely leaves room for the news!

Indeed. My "hometown" paper, The Boston Globe, has had this policy for some time. (And it's owned by the New York Times Company.)

It's good to hear that some ideas at least cross the Atlantic in the reverse direction from the usual one.
