Do they truly work well yet?

I'm a big fan of alternatives to MS Office, conceptually, but the last I looked, a couple of years ago there were very visible differences in Star Office or perhaps it was Open Office. Docs created in Word simply did not open the same in the open version, if the formatting was at all challenging, e.g. multiple levels of bullets or paragraph numbering.
