Yikes! Have you considered the equivalent of bunk beds? <g>

The nice thing about LCDs is thinness. Including its supporting bracket, mine (a 22-inch Apple LCD) takes up 6 or 7 inches of depth on the desk (at the bracket — there is a lot of space around that). I have the monitor pushed back about 15 inches, and routinely have stacks of books and papers in front. There is room in the back for hard drives and other assorted junk. My desk measures 25 inches in depth, and has a keyboard shelf hung beneath it.

To use this, I sit back about a foot and a half (making the eye to screen distance roughly 24 to 30 inches). But this means my chair protrudes quite a bit from the front of the desk, something you probably need to consider. (You don’t want to place two workstations with people back to back, for example. Or in the only access aisle.)
