"due to licensing restrictions, this font cannot be embedded..."
There is only one restriction (out of four possible) embedding restrictions that forbids all embedding. Many fonts supplied with an operating system allow unrestricted embedding, but nearly all allow either editable embedding or (slightly less favourable) embedding that allows printing and viewing, which is all you need if you're making PDF files with Acrobat.

Adobe's fonts are all either editable or printing & viewing only; a complete list is give somewhere on the Adobe web site, but the information is academic for PDF files. Microsoft have an add-on that allows viewing of font file properties, which include the embedding restrictions; possibly Apple Computing has a similar program.

Nearly every font manufacturer uses the standard font embedding restrictions, but a few of the smaller ones don't; it is best to avoid these, or use the old-style Type 1 fonts, which don't have the embedding information in them (but that is really a cop-out, and anyway some programs assume the worst and report, 'No embedding allowed!' if they don't find the true embedding restriction.

Look first! Then you'll get no nasty surprises.
