Mike:

I used to like Gallois but I often bought Gitanes because I liked the design on the packet

I don't like cigarettes that go out if you don't keep drawing on them, no matter what the design is on the packet. But I believe Gitanes have disappeared for ever.

What on earth is a Gauloises blondes or a Gitanes blonde? And do I see filters on them? I think I shall faint.

When I smoked I loved Gauloises, heaven help me. In the blue packet, with no filter. I can still almost remember the taste, which for a cigarette was very interesting.

Fortunately (I haven’t smoked a cigarette since 1972) I seem to have survived.

All normal. "Blonde" is a different tobacco blend, with lighter leaves (and generally a "lighter" taste, apparently - but I've never smoked cigarettes). And all of those come (or came) with filters, indeed. Some people want them.

My granddad was a tobacconist. When I stayed there, I used to help filling the outside vending machines; only the most-sold stuff went in there. For the filters, blonde, extra strong, menthol etc. you had to come into the store.

Marjolein:

I'm certain that the French-English journalist who complained that they had disappeared in France did not mean the cigarettes visible on that Web site. Filters! Blonde!

I am an “all or nothing” sort of person. If I am smoking, then I want to smoke intensely.

Else, not at all. <g>

I did read that they were still being made at one factory in Spain just for the Spanish market.

That page I linked to claimed the brand is owned by a Spanish company, but the cigarettes themselves are made in the Netherlands. Not that I have any idea how much of that information is true...

Whichever, I bet they're not as good as they used to be.
