Default Adobe Flash Player 9

Adobe has announced Flash Player 9 (its first under the Adobe flag, I do believe). The plugin works with Firefox, MSIE, Safari, Netscape, Mozilla, Opera, and AOL (not CompuServe, I guess!).

It has been tested on most common Windows and Mac OS X systems. And it is free, of course.

That is odd. Normally a new version of the player only comes out when there is a new verison of Flash, and I haven't heard of one. I will have to trundle off to Adobe and see what is new in this verison.

Just "branding" I guess, now that Adobe has taken over Macromedia.

They claim some improvements, including security.

Not too much, though. And Flash 9, the app, is still in beta, far as I know. Which is fine with me — I rarely find Flash stuff interesting, and it is sometimes extremely annoying. New versions always seem to inspire more of the stuff.

Boy, I really am grumpy! <g>

You and me both! Though the latest complete reinstall of Win2K on Christiaan seems a lot smoother than any of the previous attempts.

(I'll probably regret mentioning that, come tomorrow morning - grrr, grumble and grump. Oh, and it's time for another battery change on Grace's keyboard - whatever happened to low-battery warnings? Surely one of the numerous gremlins ate them.)

Bite your tongue! Never say anything good about computers, or they will get even!

It is like telling a client that a job will be “a piece of cake” — that will inevitably be the job from hell!

And I’m really not superstitious. Just a pragmatic observer.

Oof! I noticed that yesterday when I was getting the information on Flash 9 and my eyes crossed! Reminded me of the Carousel/Acrobat rollout — what does it really do, I wondered.

And then I just picked up the Flash note and ran. Shame on me.

So: Can you tell us in your nice clear English what this Flex stuff is good for? And who is likely to use it? Big-time web site developers; ordinary people? Is it some sort of CMS?
