Default Domain Name Kiting

Bob Parsons, President of Godaddy.com, has his own blog site. Here is an interesting article on domain name kiting.

http://www.bobparsons.com/DomainKiting.html

Parsons says, in effect, that 90% of the domain names registered are not paid for, they are cancelled before they have to be paid for, and re-registered by the same people, who manage to make money by hits to web sites linked to these domain names. This kind of volume must have an adverse effect on the domain name servers providing services to all Internet users.

What do you think? Does it do any good to protest to ICANN?

I've often wondered about the cost of registering and holding domain names ... seems this explains how it is done. The solution, I suspect, is that a person who takes advantage of the five day refund period should be prohibited from re-registering that same domain name for a year.

I'm not as certain as the author that ICANN is not concerned and possibly doing something. Big beaurocracies move slowly, and the internal movement is not always apparent from the outside. But I suspect that if 90% of the registrations are not going through, there must be some concern.

The paperwork alone must be a major expense.

If I understand Parsons correctly, registrars controlled by the kiting artists are doing the work. There must be a large programming effort behind it, to keep records and make the changes for millions of domain names. He even says that a few names from the kiting schemes do get registered, because they know which ones make the most money from click-throughs.
