Default CPanel weirdness

I want to back up a database so have been attempting to log in to CPanel on the host server. It keeps timing out. I have been in and out of there several times during the past 24 hours, so I know this normally works.

Thinking it might be a server glitch, I open Fetch and click on a text file on the server, and it connected and got me a copy of the file in the wink of an eye. So the server is okay.

What else could cause CPanel to time out when the server is directly accessible — any bright ideas? I’m about out of them, myself.

All I know about CPanel (from reading hosts' documentation) is that it's a memory hog. Could it be waiting for swap space that just doesn't become available either, or not in time?

Possibly more to the point: do you have:
  • access to phpMyAdmin or
  • SSH access
  • or access to the database remotely from a client running on your own machine?

I commonly use SQLyog (freeware in its basic form, but Windows-only); I've never even used phpMyAdmin.

  • The phpMyAdmin that I am used to is accessed from CPanel — that’s what I was after.
Anyway, I just went away for a while, and next time I tried, I got right in. What seemed troublesome is that everything else worked — direct access to the server, software running on it — just not the damned CPanel!

SSH is beyond me.

Thanks.
