Default iPod Help?

A client has lent my husband an iPod to use at Le Mans but she didn't send a manual and he can't find Help, a guide or manual on the iPod itself. He has plugged it into his computer (laptop running WinXP SP2) via USB and it appears to come up normally. However, within a minute or two a large circle with slash through it appears on the screen and it says, "Do Not Disconnect". Wait, wait, wait ... nothing happens. "Safely Remove Hardware" says the device is busy and shouldn't be removed. My husband powered down and tried it on his backup laptop with the same result.

When the iPod is not plugged into a computer everything appears to be fine with it.... He has left a message for the client but so far has not had a call back. Anybody here have any idea what's up? And where is "Help" on an iPod? We're feeling pretty stupid - just about every teenager on the planet seems to have one of these things and we're clueless.

Apple has an iPod Troubleshooting site that might help.

And I think there are some iPod smarties over on Snarkish (the independent form of the old CIS Mac forums). Worth asking there.

Does it come up as a separate ddrive letter? Go into Windows configuration (I don't kneo where in XP - things are in different places than on Win2K which I use) and make sure you tell it to not index that drive. I had similar problems sometimes when I plugged in my camera phone.

Another thing to try is the Unlocker Assistant - do a forum search, it was mentiuoned here rather recently and I now have it permanently running - which can help as well: it can "kick off" any program having a hold onto the drive so you can unplug it "safely" after that (after giving it a decent time to do any normal saving and flushing, of course).

Do you have iTunes installed? The iPod interacts with iTunes on a PC

Thanks everyone - indeed, we think we have narrowed the problem down to not having iTunes installed, and found a rather clunky workaround. But the simplest solution is probably to just download iTunes and be done with it. At least then we'll know if that was the issue or not.

I have passed on this info to my husband. A quick forum search found only your reference here to Unlocker Assistant, but I'll poke about further when I have a bit more time. Many thanks, Marjolein!

If you're planning to actually ise it - install it; if not? why would you install a program you don't need?
