Default Desktop font-matching tool

Stretched Out Software has released FontMatch, a tool for finding a particular font among your files based on a scanned image. It will search the fonts loaded on your computer or in a particular directory. (I have no idea if there is any limit, either real or practical.)

It is described as comparing “positive and negative space in a manner very similar to the way your eyes do.” Then it displays your specimen with the same character from one or more likely fonts (showing a percentage of likelihood next to each).

The developer claims that its speed is “almost magical.”

Costs $40. Available for Mac OSX and Windows. Demo available at the web site.

I just redid it and tried it, and am getting a time out.

It worked earlier; give it a try later, is all I can recommend. If this persists, I will remove the link altogether.

Turns out they had a DOS attack on the host server this morning. Seems to have been fixed, though access is not instantaneous (the link is actually a redirect, which may have something to do with it).

Give it another shot.

KT:

though access is not instantaneous

It seemed so though, for me (using FireFox; silly name, but a very fast browser).

What seems almost magical to me is how forum members post a font screen capture here, and KT or someone else identifies it quite quickly, and most of the time exactly.

The software is no help when the font is nothing like what is on your own hard drive, if I am reading their description correctly.

So, KT, are you buying this software?

I will certainly play with it.

It would actually help me, as I often do not remember the name of a typeface even though I own it. This should make identification very fast if I have the font (and I have accumulated thousands over the years).

Besides, it sounds amusing.

From what you say, it would seem that the program checks against all the fonts on your hard drive, even though they are not installed in the Windows font directory.

The developer says it — at least the beta 3 version — will check installed fonts or search in any directory. Not positive about the version 2 features.
