Default ASmallOrange, inexpensive hosting

I saw a strong recommendation for shared hosting from asmallorange.com today, so I looked it up on Web Hosting talk and found mostly very positive comments — for its shared hosting services. It has a $25/year plan and a $5/month plan, both with modest bandwidth and space (but probably adequate for most personal sites).

Offers PHP 4 and MySQL as needed, even for these small plans. Includes cPanel, Fantastico, POP3 or IMAP e-mail, and Webalizer/AW Stats. Users say it responds to help tickets within minutes, and that forum software runs speedily.

It might be a good alternative for a GoDaddy site. GoDaddy offers a lot more space and traffic allotment, but gets slammed all the time for poor (dramatically slow) hosting support. (Raves for its domain registration, generally, however.)

The only negative comments I did see about ASO were for its virtual private servers, which are supposedly slated for a new data center by May 2006 but in the meantime have a lot of downtime.

Just thought I’d mention it. Rarely find a host with such happy customers.

The last time I checked them out the photos of their data center showed the same data center as RealWebHost. Not that this means A = B, but it was interesting to note.

It appears that quite a few shared-hosting providers use that data center.

Not sure what it means, exactly. Some service and support responsibilities rest with the host: how much redundancy does he pay for, how closely does he monitor the data center, how well does he interact with it, how fast does he respond to subscribers (and how well).

The Real Web Hosting 'review' that some of us fell for intimated very strongly that RWH had their own data centre, but my interaction with RWH after that indicated that the shortcomings were local to RWH and not connected with the data centre, apart from the one instance when a major backbone problem put that data centre, as well as others, out for some time.

Not sure either. I have feeling that the subcontractors provide their own computers, and the data center houses them. But who knows. It would be interesting to find out, though.
