BUT - looking through the list and counting only Windows and Java apps, there are 32 candidates for you - but Java is likely going to be too slow on Win98. Then there are some apps in that list that I know are going to have the same problem Windows search has: they will recognize only plain text in PDF documents and not "extract" text like Adobe can (by using the PDF format), when individual characters are positioned and the text is not a normal plain-text string.

Discounting the Java apps, programs that I recognize as server-apps (those will never work on Windows 98) and ones I know cannot do PDF-specific "extraction" (like ht://Dig and SWISH-E), there are only 20 left - with many "unknowns". Discount anything with "web" in their name (obviously intended for cooperation with a web server - some apps will only work with a webserver, or even a specific webserver), and there are fewer again. Quickly going through what's left and looking for platform support, I see only 6 candidates, ranging from do-your-own-compile to $25,000, or dedicated hardware. Not very promising, in spite of what looks like a long list...

What's your budget? ;-)
