Default Cold Fusion (pre-MX)

I am trying to implement Session variables on a CF 4.5 server as part of an anti-spam project and the good news is that my hair is already grey.

1) In the CF control panel I have enabled Session Managment with a 20-minute timeout.
2) In the root directory of the (virtual) site I have added an Application.cfm script enabling session management and establishing 20 minutes as the timeout interval and application timeout of 2 hours.

With the addition of #2 I no longer get an error setting the value of a varaible named session.something -- but testing IsDefined('session.something') in the linked script fails.

The only scripting guide I have is for CF MX and I suspect there have been substantial changes in the interim.

Is there anyone familiar with this subject?
