Default Strunk, illustrated, set to music!

Penguin Press releases the first ilustrated edition of Strunk & White’s The Elements of Style this week. The illustrations are by Maira Kalman (of the famous “Newyorkistan” cover of The New Yorker, and they seem to be charming and even apt. See an example in today’s NYTimes article (Oct. 19, 2005 — read it free for a week).

But wait — there’s more!

Nico Muhly, a young composer with Dada-ist tendencies, has composed songs from Strunk & White, kind of early-music-ish in style. To quote from the Times article, the singer “sang mellifluously of punctuation and orthography.” One can only imagine.

(The lyrical version of The Elements of Style will be performed tonight in the New York Public Library. Not sure if it will be recorded, but maybe it will turn up somewhere for the rest of us one day.)
