Default Unshrinkable PDF

I've got a PDF I can't shrink. I'm using Acrobat 7 Pro, and have a fair amount of experience with the PDF Optimizer, but it ain't working on this file.

The client doesn't have the original source files, just a 4.4 MB PDF that she wants shrunk down to 500 KB or less. The PDF is full of huge photos (some of them may be duotones -- not sure if that's part of the problem) and the images account for about 91% of the PDF size.

I've tried setting the downsampling to as low as 60 ppi, but can't get the file size below 2.8 MB. And in the downsampled file, the photos still look sharp and clear, so they are obviously not being downsampled, at least not by much. They should really look pretty bad at 60 ppi. (Client doesn't care about image quality, only file size.)

I had no trouble downsizing this client's other PDFs -- it's just this one that is resisting me.

Any ideas?
