Default Quark’s new logo

So, what do you think of the new Quark logo, described as “fresh, inviting, and open,” according to the Quark director of corporate communications (as quoted in an article in Macworld/UK .

And what about the new corporate color, PMS 368 green?

Do you think it actually does “help Quark break out of the visual ‘sea of sameness’ that lumps together so many corporate software companies”? (That was a quote from the designer of the new logo, quoted in the MacWorld article.)

Comments at Veer and in the Quark forums point out the striking similarity between this logo and the one for the Scottish Arts Council and the somewhat less striking resemblance (if you squint) to Apple’s QuickTime mark.

Comments, anyone?

I think it looks identical to the logo of the Scottish Arts Council. And I do mean identical, except for the color.

It looks like the logo for some gasoline company to me. I guess I'm old fashioned, because I just don't like it.

That's sure to turn the company around.

Good heavens, you're right!

I wonder what kind of flack they'll get over it...

Not that I'm opposed to giving designers work, you understand.

Fresh and original. That's Quark!

No "sea of sameness" there!

Isn't it interesting that one designer considers that a Q and another one considers it an 'a'.

Default Quark's new logo....

I rather like the symbol. It's unfortunate if it proves to be derivative. I also like the green, although, color psychology aside, it's a rather ordinary 'meadow green'. Middle of the road. I think of Quark and its products as highly sophisticated, so a pedestrian green is a bit of a disappointment.

Yes, I do think it helps Quark 'break out'. Very definitely.

I do think the wordmark part of it should have been set in Richard Weber's wonderful 'Papageno' (1958, Bauer). That would be fun.

Seriously, though, the only thing about the logo that bothers me is very easily fixed: The tail of the Q and the k terminals at right need to mirror each other, I think. Either angle them, as with the Q. Or, make them horizontal, as with the k. But not both. As they are, they fight with each other, visually. And that actually distracts away from the new symbol. Which is also unfortunate. My vote would be to follow the k, as that would also reflect what's going on in the symbol. (Fix them early on, and a year from now, you'll be glad you did....)

And the current web page at quark.com is nice, contemporary, but with the newness of the Q symbol and wordmark portion lettering, I'd think they'd simplify things visually on the page by using their wordmark face for the headline. So at least the Qs match....

I really am happy to see them move away from that black 'racetrack' symbol, which never seemed to me to capture the quality the company brings to its products.

I note you didn’t suggest Gumball but the original.

For lurkers, you can see Papageno on the Bowfin site; scroll down about two-thirds of the way, look for a blue script.

Just to put Joe’s suggestion in context!
