Default InDesign PDFs

Hello!

In the olden days, I seem to remember that it was possible to set up Ventura Publisher to print a PostScript file to disc one page at a time. One of the publishers we work for requires single page PDFs for printing, and I haven't found a way of persuading InDesign CS to do this for me. Am I missing something, or is it simply not possible?

Best wishes, Adrian

It's possible via a script. What platform are you on, Mac or PC?

Wharfrat,

Unfortunately, our client has supplied the PDF export settings to use from within InDesign.

Shane,

I'm afraid I don't know the first thing about scripting! We're running InDesign CS1 under Mac OSX 10.7.3.

No better time to learn than when it can solve your problem. Find and open Script Editor (in /Applications/AppleScript/), paste the script below in a script window, save it as a script, put it into the folder called Scripts inside InDesign's Presets folder, got to the Window and choose Scripting--Scripts, and double-click on the script in the palette that appears.

tell application "InDesign CS"
set allPresets to name of every PDF export preset
set thePreset to choose from list allPresets
if thePreset = false then
beep
error number -128
else
set the thePreset to item 1 of thePreset
end if
try
set thepath to full name of document 1
on error
set theDesk to path to desktop as string
set thepath to theDesk & (name of document 1)
end try
if thepath ends with ".indd" then
set thepath to text 1 thru -6 of thepath
end if
set pageCount to pages per document of document preferences of document 1
repeat with i from 1 to pageCount
set page range of PDF export preferences to i
export document 1 to file (thepath & "-" & i & ".pdf") format PDF type using PDF export preset thePreset without showing options
end repeat
beep
display dialog "Finshed." buttons {"OK"} default button 1
end tell

Shane,

Thank you ... I think! I will go off and try this now. I suspect that I'll be back though!

Shane,

And here I am again! I've run the script on two projects, with several presets, and I get the same error message: "InDesign CS got an error: Can't make some data into the expected type - 1700". So two questions. What does this mean? And how do I begin to understand your script? Is there an easy-to follow intoduction to scripting? OK -- three questions!

Best wishes, Adrian

Try running the script while it's open in Script Editor (hit the Run button), and tell me what part of the script is selected after the error happens.

Shane,

It stops with this selected:

export document 1 to file (thepath & "-" & i & ".pdf") format PDF type using PDF export preset thePreset without showing options
