Default Storing and sharing contact lists/info

In preparation of getting a new phone I tried to see how I could transfer contacts from my old phone. Normally I would use the backup that is stored on the phone company's server, but it's years out of date because my old phone lost ability to do routine backups.

Well, after too much research and fiddling, I figured out how to use Bluetooth to send contacts to my PC. They came over as individual VCF files. So I assume I could also send via bluetooth to a new phone, considering that this appears to be a standard file format for storing contacts.

So now that I'm graduating to a smart phone, I guess I should think about whether to get all connected and synced via Google or some other cloud.

When I got a new phone, AT&T transferred everything -- contacts, images etc -- to the new one. Normally I think that would go with the SIM card but the new phone had one of the smaller kind and so they took it in back and did it there.

Back before Smartphones I had Nokia software that accessed the phone and enabled me to move images etc to and from the phone/computer. Extremely convenient was being able to input or edit contacts using the full size computer keyboard instead of the tiny one on the clamshell although that was better than the one on the later smartfone screen.

Huawei had a similar software too so it may be useful to look for it for your phone or how to access it over the USB cable connection?
