I actually considered sticking a dummy plug into the headphone port for just this reason, but it'd be clumsy.

OTOH, if it happens again, I'll probably stick some non-gummy adhesive tape across the bottom of the case I've got it in.

While my Tbird is an old version, my sister's Tbird is current and it didn't work until we logged into the gmail account and changed the setting to "Turn On" at:
https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps

which allows what Google/gmail deems as "less secure" applications to send/retrieve gmail mail.

Yes but the problem is that the error message one receives does not make this clear (at all!) that this is the problem. I had to do quite a bit of searching to finally find the cause and of course the solution which is to log in to the gmail account and change the setting to "Turn On" at: https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps
