Default iPad Mini won't show movies

Well this is weird. I've got one of the original iPad Mini tablets. Suddenly, as of a day or three ago, it won't show movies. Not from Netflix, not from Amazon Prime, not even from Google videos/YouTube.

There's been no iOS update ... they stopped updating this thing some time ago. It's still on 9 point something and tells me it's got nothin' if I ask it to check for updates.

It's certainly not the internet connection speed; SpeedTest gave me > 25mbps the other night when I checked it, and I was able to play movies over the same wifi connection on both the Mac Air and a recently updated iPhone 5.

Apple's shoving me toward a new iPad, is that the deal?

Hm. I don't know that I'd say that. My old computers still work as well as they ever did. They may not be up to the demands of newer software, and I'll happy pin the pig tail on MS for its ever expanding demands for computer resources, but I don't see any evidence that MS is deliberately slowing them down when running the s'ware that's already on 'em.

If it gets to where my iPhone stops being usable due to a case of The Slows, I'll be looking at non-Apple alternatives. Might have to keep the old iPhone around just to run a program called IMIWA, the best Japanese/English dictionary app I've ever run across.

In any case, movies started working again. Sorta. Now it will get partway through a film, then freeze the video and tell me that it'll resume when my connection improves. Ah. The connection that gives me 60mbps and up over wifi according to five or six speed test sites? THAT connection? Oh, Apple, you're such a kidder.

Will you take advantage of Apple's $29-replace-the-battery deal on your iPhone?

I've got a reminder to check into whether they have that offer for my iPhone 5. So far, all I've seen mentioned is the 6 and onward. If they offer it? In a heartbeat.

I think you are right about it being for the 6 but...maybe you could talk them into it??

If they don't go for it, I've read that ifxit has a kit for $17-ish (don't know what they charge for shipping)...

Interesting ...

Right now, I'm on to other distractions. @*#$^ing Win10 update has just made Windows decide that I don't have "permission" to open files on my network. If I had to rely on Win10 for my living, I'd be dead. Luckily, this is just a machine I keep around as a warning to myself.

Yeah...there are a number of reports in the Microsoft forum at dslreports.com of the same sort of shit happening and then of course, there are the annoying rejoinders by those who say "Oh!!! Win10 is soooo wonderful and I've never had any problems at all with any of the updates!"

Errrggg!!! '-}}

I'm not sure I'm remembering things correctly that there might be a workaround/solution from those threads but I'll give a look in a bit and report back if I can find the ref's...

Later Edit:

Ok...found the thread I was thinking of "[WIN10] Creators FORCED crapdate" and specifically look at the 2 following posts:

Individual Post 1...

Individual Post 2...

Basically, the suggestion is to create a new user which will have "clean" unfarkled permissions...

Creating a new user ... the kinder, gentler version of MS Support Classic: Reinstall Windows. Kinder and Gentler being relative terms.

I think I've found the fix, actually. It's actually a combination of the Win10 updates and basic laptop weirdness.

See, the laptop (an Asus UX501-VW) has problems recognizing some USB devices, some of the time, when you plug them in after it's fired up. PITA, but not such a big one, since I don't disconnect it very often. When I do, I've gotten used to powering it down with external keyboard and USB-to-Ethernet adapter disconnected, letting it wake up, and only then plugging the stuff back in. And then it works.

So far, not totally copacetic, but predictable and bearable.

So now comes the Win10 update, which forces a reboot or two. And and after the rebootage, the laptop can still see the network drives. Smurfy. Or so I figured.

But at this point if I doubleclick a pic on the network, it gives me backchat about my permissions. If I start an app and do File, Open, it works ok though, so there's a strong odor of cowpattie with just a soupcon of red herring awaft on the local breezes.

So I'm blaming the half-fast recognition of the network on Win10, its updates + reboots and the general numbskull USB stuff on the Asus. Which doesn't seem to have any available USB driver updates.

But at least I can stick with the usual disconnect/reconnect protocol and move on with life. I'm not gonna spend any more time on this. But can somebody tell me where I can send the bill for all the time I've wasted on it so far?

LOL!!! Indeed...'-}}

I have yet to duplicate my primary Win7 user profile on my current (2015) system--and do my annual check to see if my "Duplicate User Profile" post is still accurate (for Win7 at least)--only because of sheer laziness and I was thinking just last night that I really should do that pretty soon now...'-}}

By any chance have you checked the BIOS/UEFI* for the following type(s) options that I found on my 2015-built system--these are my notes to myself for changes/tweaks to my system:

1. Change UEFI/BIOS USB Support to “full initialization” (from “partial initialization") so all USB ports active on boot

2. Change UEFI/BIOS PS2 Keyboard & Mouse Support to “full initialization” (from auto) for PS2 keyboard

*I have a vague memory that we might have discussed this before. Did we???

Yeah...right...'-}}
