Default Software Subscriptions & Windows 10

Hopefully they are full size .....

It's the Gillette model ....... everywhere: Free MS Office with Windows 8; Free upgrade to Windows 10 during the first year after release .... and then pay them yearly?

They seem to have been.

And yes, the Gillette model was exactly my thought.

Kodak did that at one time too. Everyone who had an 18th birthday in a certain year (month?) got a free camera. My dad was one of the lucky ones.

No, because you'll still own your copy of Windows, you won't have to subscribe to anything or buy anything additional.
What MS is after here, is the same reason they (allegedly) had for dropping Win9x. Developing and supporting multiple code bases is a HUGE WASTE. One code base for NT6 (Vista) and Win7. Another for Win8 and Win8.oops. And then another !? for Win10.
Five development, support, and security teams? Or screams from orphaned users, as in XPers who simply refuse to upgrade?

Easier to give away to OS, and shut down all the separate teams in favor of just one. "Well the upgrade is free, you can't complain that we're getting rid of your old OS."

Free, sure. Here, like my Buffo Toad. Free.

You never did own a copy of Windows. It has always belonged to Microsoft. What you paid for was a limited license to use it in a certain way!

You may own the media but the media isn't the software.

Unfortunately there are definite indications that Microsoft may be moving to a service basis as it has with Office already and is the case with other products such as security.

Hadn't thought of THAT angle, silly me. But ...

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/about

says that there will be no additional charges for the "supported lifetime of the device" (device meaning phone, tablet, PC, etc)(supported lifetime meaning baud only knows what).

Yeah. Well. Even working together, we can't throw them very far.

And assuming that trust extends an equal distance ...

Yeah. Well.

Your supported lifetime ended a millisecond before your device went belly up...
