Default Windows XP support ends April 8, 2014

Not sure what to say about this. Here's what Microsoft has to say. And this will give you an estimate of the percent of desktop users on XP.

Well...since I turned off auto updates on my XP systems pretty much after I got them and I never used Microsoft for support, it's not a loss for me personally but I'll bet it's going to be a problem for quite a few businesses out there...

I read somewhere that most cashpoints/atms run on XP...

At least one major hospital/medical office in this area does too.

Unfortunately their systems aren't straightforward or cheap to update - and in some cases applications are depending on certain XP components in order to work. But you would have expected them to prepare for this situation, it's not like it was a sudden decision on behalf of Microsoft to cease support.

Microsoft's pronouncements, as ever, are not entirely to be trusted.

"With the new Windows, you’ll have the same familiar desktop that have today and still do things, like email, ..."

For which read: " ... as long as you don't use POP mail. We don't do that any more."

The people who read and believe all the happygibber on the MS site are likely the same people as use Windows WhateverMail and don't even realize that there are other options.

I heard from a friend of mine just yesterday saying that she had a new email address, the old one no longer works. New Win 8 computer y'see. (Which, to be fair, she loves ... and she wasn't all that upset over losing her old email address).

"Happygibber" is new to me but I like it! In effect much like believing all the stuff Apple says.

All those fanboys (and girls) who wouldn't stoop so low as to use a PC. I doubt they even know what PC stands for.

Which Microsoft product doesn't do POP email anymore?
