Default MS Office 15 (aka 2013) Preview, anyone?

No? Well ... tennis, then?

Yes? Thoughts? And how long did the install take? I've installed it twice, have friends who've done so also and we're seeing wildly different experiences. For some, the install works smoothly and completes quickly, for others it needs to be coddled and babied along, and for some it takes ... well ... my friend in Australia swears he watched a glacier come and go while waiting. It helped to pass the time.

It's available here in case you're interested:

I think the guy on this page may be from Oz too. Some strange antipodean marsupial seems to have landed on his head. Eating his brains, perhaps. Maybe that's how he came to install Office 2013.

IAC, should you install it, you do NOT want to let it at your existing Live account, if you have one. Create a new dummy one just for test purposes.

And like any major betaware, you really (really, really, REALLY) don't want to install this on a "production" computer, to use the MS term. In English: on any computer you don't mind reformatting later.

Hint: Virtual Machines Are Your Friend.

Alas, keeping up with the quirks of half a dozen versions of Office and as many Windows/Mac OS versions is enough fun w/o my mixing in LibreOffice as well.

I wonder though ... is there much of a commercial market in third-party automation software for LibreOffice and its kin?

Don't know about commercial market, but LibreOffice is now the version included with most Linux distros...

Does it have decent mail merge capabilities? That is what has stopped me spending time on OS versions of Office s/win the past?

I do mail merges often in Office. I've never had any problems. They both run very well. I've done letters, forms, labels and envelopes, both in Office 2007 and 2010.

Sorry Susie - I was referring to the various OS Office versions - OpenOffice for example is pretty deficient if you want to do anything out of the ordinary like filtering records. Should have been clearer!

Libre Office seems to have the ability to do mail merge, at least according to this page on their Wiki. I am no mail merge maven, so cannot say if this is sufficient for what you need.

OK. I have Open Office, but haven't tried mail merge on it.

I've never done (or needed) mail merge... I might need it in the near future though. LibreOffice only, I'm not going back to not-so-open-any-more OpenOffice (Oracle has lost a lot of credit in the OSS community).
