Default Easy online favicon (.ico) maker

I had been struggling to create a favicon (the cute little icon that appears next to URLs in browsers). I had tried using a plugin for Photoshop and a couple of other tricks, but could never get a favicon to work right on the web.

Then Kelvyn (what a goldmine of information he is!) over on INETPUB recommended an online favicon generator: FavIcon from Pics. (That site also has a link to a favicon validator and other interesting links.)

I just tried it, and it works like a charm. You can create your artwork at any size (but it is a waste not to make it square — the favicon itself ends up 16 pixels tall, and that is not much space).

I fed it a JPEG; not sure what other formats it accepts. Moments later, voila! A file of the right name and size, ready for download.

Now the trick is to get it to appear in my web pages. But at least I have it.

Works for Macs as well as Windows, btw.

One trick I've learnt is that while you can name the file whatever.ico, some visiting browsers or bots or spiders or whatever will look for a file called favicon.ico, and their failures show up in the logs. So I just added a favicon.ico file to my root directory, and the errors disappeared.

It probably makes sense, in hindsight, to just use favicon.ico as the name.

Ah, well — I thought you had to name it “favicon.ico” for it to work.

But on a Mac you cannot simply rename the file — it needs to be comprehensibly an .ico file in order to function properly.

You can name them something else, as long as they are truly a .ico file. You can't just rename a .gif, for example.

But the name, at least from my reading when I was creating mine, doesn't have to be favicon.ico as long as you have they syntax correct in your meta tag.

Some visiting software, however, appears to require that the file have the exact name.

Yeah, I read that too. But since each site can only have one (at a time), I didn’t see a downside to using favicon.ico. (The copy in my files is labeled more specifically, though — I am too easy to confuse to do otherwise!)

I'm pretty sure Steve Rindsberg told me, when I was creating mine, that you can have more than one for a site, as long as you're careful with the URL. Somewhere deep in the bowels of OzWin, I think I still have that thread.

That’s interesting. Why don’t we just ask him again. No need to dig into your antique threads!

Odd — I never figured you (or any reasonable person) as having any other! <g>
