Default Succinct web design advice

Jerry Whiting, once (and probably still) the king of barcodes, ace of PageMaker, and much more, has posted a nice clear page of essential tips for designing search-engine-friendly web pages on his Jet City Orange blog.

The other articles in the list at the left are also useful.

Check it out.

Not sure what he means by 'use hspace/vspace/border even if you don't need to', but hspace and vspace are deprecated and not supported in HTML 4.01 Strict / XHTML 1.0 Strict DTD (we are encouraged to use CSS instead of inline styling).

Otherwise the advice confirms my view that we should use common sense and avoid trying to mess with search engine results using suspect SEO.

My eyebrow went up a bit at that, but then I wondered if he is suggesting to use them regardless. But that doesn’t make much sense. Maybe I will ask him.

Seems so.

He does address the hspace issue in another page with:

In the interest of full disclsure, [sic] the align, border, hspace, and vspace attributes were deprecated in HTML 4.01 and are not supported in XHTML 1.0 Strict DTD. They still work but are better handled in CSS.

Clarifies part of it, but not the 'even if you don't need to' bit.

I can't see any reference to when this was written - it may have been relevant back then. Well, it would have to be quite some time ago since both HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.0 have been with us for many years. (Since 1999 and 2000 respectively.)
