Default iPhone no longer available in NYC?

According to a post on Mashable, AT&T will no longer sell iPhone in NYC.

The Consumerist confirms this odd report.

The reason is congestion in NYC. Odd, but I guess it makes sense.

Well, I think that's quite odd indeed. I guess this is good news for Verizon's Droid??

Maybe that will encourage Apple to make the iPhone available on other networks.

Maybe.

Apple claims that poor AT&T service in NYC is the problem. Today’s NY Times has three double-truck ads from AT&T bragging about its 3G coverage and speed in NYC.

One of them is wrong. If this is indeed the issue.

It is back on sale now - online. http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/28/o...new-york-city/

Over here it is being marketed by 3 carriers and is also easily available "unlocked". But is still expensive when compared to Android & the latest Win mobiles. Word is that it is too bandwidth hungry so the providers do not want to sell it at less than a premuim price.

I'm very happy with my Android phone...

I'm no marketer by any stretch of the imagination, but I find it peculiar that in its "home"--and presumably biggest--market, the iPhone is restricted to a single carrier. Here in Canada, after getting a very late start, the iPhone is now available on all 3 (or 4) of the biggest carriers. I suppose the Canadian market is so small that Apple needs all the potential buyers to make it worth their while.

Or that Canadian laws don't permit restricting customers to just the one carrier?

I dunno, but I kinda doubt it--at least, I've never heard anything to that effect, but I could be wrong. The iPhone started out here with only one carrier (Rogers), simply because they were the only one with a 3G network. Now they've all got 3G and they all sell iPhones.
