Default Inexpensive Font Creation - Mac

A friend is looking for a low-cost font creation tool for his Mac. He is into the world of online and fantasy games and wants to create fonts for fantasy languages. I searched the archive here and found nothing. Suggestions anyone?

TypeTool is probably the best bet. It can create new fonts (basic OpenType format) or edit existing ones, and costs $100.

The old standby,
Fontographer
, is $350. It is a full-fledged font editor (but does not create OpenType fonts).

There is also a free open source font editor called FontForge that runs on the Mac. I have not tried to use it, but suspect it would be challenging to use. On the other hand, the $ price is right; might be worth a look-see.

Thanks. FontForge is probably his best bet to start with. I am sure I have heard of it, but my poor brain could not come up with any references.

Bob--

I wonder if he really needs fonts to do this? If he's just filling a cartoon speech bubble with weird characters spouting from the mouth of Zargon the Wizard, he'd get just as much mileage from a vector drawing program. Font creation programs are just vector drawing programs at the level of actually creating the glyphs (I used to use Fontographer*), and they're no easier to use for this purpose. It's only when it comes to encoding the glyphs into an actual font that there's a difference, and I'm not sure I see the need for this (except possibly for the convenience of typing them onto the screen from a keyboard). It might be just as easy to create a bunch of glyphs in a drawing program and copy-and-paste them into position in the layout.

*I originally bought Fontographer with the idea of doing something very similar to your friend's apparent goal: I wanted to make a font of geological symbols, which I thought would be great to simply type from a keyboard, but in the end I went the vector drawing copy-and-paste route, which was more convenient for randomly positioning symbols on a layout.

But to answer your original question directly, no--I don't know of a cheap Mac font creation program. Maybe someone else does. Try searching versiontracker.com, perhaps?
