Default InDesign tutorials, self-teaching

After several years doing old-fashioned code-based typesetting, I'm trying to get my desktop skills back up to speed, while looking for a new job.

I have Deke McClelland's "InDesign CS3 One-on-One" book, which is a pretty good walk-through of techniques, but which operates in sort of a vacuum, practicing with prepared files.

Does anyone know of a good guide to actually setting up projects, the things you should think about and plan before you start, so you don't have to keep going back and trying to fiddle them into shape later?

Many thanks!

I wish I knew, but still start my ID projects by setting them up on an old computer in PageMaker, then shifting them to ID.

However, I have found one somewhat useful book (though I disagree with a lot of the typographic advice — but that wouldn’t bother you, I’m sure!): InDesign Type by Nigel French.

If you find more comprehensive books, do let me know. I think poor old PageMaker’s days truly are numbered!

Eric,

This is a very late response, but I used David Bergsland's "How to do everything with Adobe InDesign" when I started using InDesign. It covers setting up the program and setting up a project, and I found it really useful.

Hope this isn't too late to help!

Best wishes, Adrian
