Default Free Photos

Here is a source for free photos for commercial and personal use. And unlike many other places, this one has photos of people. As for whether they got releases for all those photos, I cannot say. But maybe you can discover this as you look around the site. I only just found it.

Thanks, Andrew. I liked the pic on the opening page--got it bookmarked to come back.

From their FAQ:

Note: You are responsible for the content of the photos you use. It is very much the same as if you had taken the photograph yourself, you must still obtain proper permission for property or people depicted in the photos if any.

IWC you'd want to be *very* careful about using photos of people from this source.
No releases, no way to contact the subjects to *get* releases.
The stuff attorneys' wet dreams are made of. ;-)

I understand needing model releases for people -- and very not nice to put them on a "free" site without making that clear, very loud and clear, although most of us know to avoid anything that doesn't say model release. But what about property? What property requires a model release when taken from a public sidewalk?

Or do they just mean no showing The Golden Arches in a pornographic image? Obviously, if you use an image to defame it by association, you run the risk of being sued.

re: What property requires a model release when taken from a public sidewalk?

Good question. There is a cyprus tree on a golf course in California that you can't use. And you can't use the Eifel Tower at night (the lighting pattern is copyrighted). I'm sure you can search around and find a number of places. I think the Space Needle folks in Seattle prohibit commercial use of images of it. Maybe the Experience Music Project building, too.

And my house, if you used it in a way I wasn't happy with and I caught you at it and wanted to be a putz about it (how deep ARE your pockets, anyhow?)

ISTR that the rules of the road vary quite a bit depending on whether you're using the photo editorially or adversari... advertor... erm. In an ad.

Tee hee — maybe so.

I remember reading about the Hollywood sign in a design magazine article about getting rights.

You can take a picture of my house any old time. Who cares? <g>

Yeah? And use it as the "Visit us here" photo on my porn site? ;-)
