Perhaps no one else has experienced this, but just in case:
I had grown used to having Safari open PDFs in the browser window. But when I moved to this Intel iMac, all of a sudden it didn’t work. Today I spent an embarassing amount of time figuring this out. If you have the same experience, show the Safari “Get Info” window, and if you see in the first pane “Open using Rosetta,” unclick that. Restart Safari, and you may be as likely as I was — PDFs will once again open in the browser window. If that doesn’t work, let me know — this is a problem that needs unraveling! __________________ :: |

Makes sense. Migrating from older software to newer.

Turns out it wasn’t that, exactly.
I have a bad habit, the Shockwave daily jigsaw puzzle. It relies on the Shockwave Player, now from Adobe, and that only runs in Rosetta. Since turning that off for Safari, I can no longer work the jigsaw in Safari. In fact, I now remember that I had this problem when I first set up the Intel iMac — Shockwave said I needed the Player so I downloaded it and must have set Safari to use Rosetta at that time. Since Firefox doesn’t open PDFs in its window, I leave that set for Rosetta and work the puzzle there. __________________ :: |

It's a good thing. Gives you more time to go feed the ducks.

BTW - There's a plug-in, err... add on for Firefox called (just then JR runs off to look) PDF Download (mine is v0.9.3.2) that adds the functionality you're lamenting to Firefox (FF add-ons don't tend to be platform specific, btw). Other add-ons that I've found useful (some I wouldn't live without) include:
NoScript (a major must have) CookieSafe (a minor must have) Sage (RSS feeds in FF that a don't suck) AdBlock and AdBlock Filter Set .G (useful for keeping the doubleclicks of the world uninformed) IS Tab (windows only ... makes FF use IE rendering engine so you never have to use IE for those shitty sites that write lame-o code requiring IE v6 or something equally idiotic) PDF Download (already mentioned) Add-ons are mucho coll but don't go to hog wild cause some add-ons are just nifty packaging for spyware). Choose wisely. |

I have a few plugins for Firefox, but I only use it under a few circumstances — for double-checking web pages (especially with the Web Developer tools) and where Safari doesn’t work.
I have AdBlock Plus for both browsers, but gave up fiddling with the rules so so they help rather than hinder, so I don’t really use them. Nice to see you around here, JR. __________________ :: |
