Default New computer setup really a pain

I decided to set up my new iMac from scratch to avoid inheriting ailments and junk from my old one. What an ordeal!

Decided to get new printer drivers; the HP site makes you work hard to find anything, especially for older printers, but I finally got the two drivers I needed. But the installer wants to put them in a place neither they nor I have permission to go. So I went to my old Mac, figured out where they were there, and put them there in the new one. Time lost: 1.15 hour.

Then it couldn’t find either printer. I found the IP address of the HP Color LaserJet 2605 and entered that in the setup utility, and then that worked. Once anyway. But the old LJ 5000 is not shown at all on the network, even though it is plugged into the same switch as the other computers, which show up fine. So I dug out the manual and see that I need to print a configuration page. Later, I guess.

Anyway, just a minor grumble. I have the weekend to spend on this. May need every minute of it, too!

I have other questions; will ask them in appropriate places.

Go to www.youtube.com
Type this into the search box:
vista vs mac

Pick "Get a Mac - Vista vs Mac - Security"

One of Apple's ads - probably the funniest in the series.

That was good. So is this one: “Apple UK Get a Mac Ad: Office Posse” — as much to see the differences in U.S. and U.K. advertising styles as for the content.

Hey, there's even an edited one that compares the same commericals as run in US, UK and Japan.

Interesting. Sociology by advertising versions!

And there was another video listed there that I found interesting. I don't know how I missed hearing about that in the news.
