Default WordPress 2.2.1 available

WordPress 2.2.1, released June 21, 2007, fixes some bugs and security issues present in version 2.2. The WP people say it is a “required upgade” (sigh).

Right now, my host’s Fantastico does not have this version; I think I will wait until it does. Upgrading by hand is tedious and annoying. (I know; such a baby!)

Takes less than 5 minutes! And most of that is checking that all is OK. I just updated 2 sites in no time at all.

I can only wish I had your knowledge and facility! I find it very anxiety-provoking.

I know it would probably teach me something if I just did it, but . . .

Is that true even if you have modified a lot of templates?

I am pretty confused already; hope not to get worse.

Series version updates do not affect templates. Full version updates such as 2.1.x to 2.2.x may do (and did for a few users of old style 1.x templates) if the template uses older non-standard php elements, but these will now have been weeded out at 2.2.0. For series updates I don't even bother turning off the plugins and have never seen a problem. I now have all my sites on servers that are backed up 4 times a day so a full site repopulation can be done within minutes.....

Ah. My site is based on Classic, with modifications stolen from the Default theme. So I get nervous.

I will try to back up over the weekend, whether Fantastico has the upgrade or not.

Take a look at my latest experiment if you have time: Verbal Cook.

I think hosts running cpanel will be trying to fix their latest security issue rather than update fantastico - which itself causes server security problems as users get to rely on it and wait for updates while leaving their sites vulnerable to hackers.

That site says cPanel 11.4.19 and 10.9.1 are not vulnerable. My host is using cPanel Pro 1.0 (RC1), which doesn’t show up on the list.

But it doesn’t matter, as Fantastico has been disabled, so something is afoot!

Guess I will just do it myself. Good for my moral fiber and technical development, right?

Fantastico is disabled? Guess I should go look.

If you figure out how to update WP without Fantastico, please share your step by step instrux and maybe I'll get brave and try it.
