Default monitoring click-throughs

I was looking for a way to monitor usage of specific URLs on a website using PHP.

I know I can send anyone clicking the link to a 'blank' page that processes the information - increments a hit count, or whatever - and then redirects the user to the 'correct' page fairly transparently, but I just wondered if there's a simpler or more elegant solution?

Any offers?
