After our other glossary entries recently, I found this one on the web that I thought I would share. Perhaps some of you will find it of interest.

Ah but they are German - so something may be lost in the translation.

But much worse: Ascender is defined as “The utmost point of the cap height, the extension of the font from the baseline to the upper end of an uppercase letter.” That is dead wrong, of course. Just about opposite of the truth. The ASCII note is not great either (I can just imagine what Groucho would have to say about that!) And Baseline grid? Oh dear. And Bit depth is dealt with kind of summarily. What this glossary calls a Blueprint we generally call a Blueline (even, in these days, it is not actually blue). This thing has the purpose right, though. Book face is not necessarily the “font used for the standard mass composition of a print product.” That might considered one use of the term by a typographically ignorant person, but it usually refers to a particular weight of a text type family. The only definition of Bookmarks refers to web browsing!!! And of Content, only “the text and graphics contained in a Web site.” Kind of narrow point of view here, huh? Is the definition of Calendering right? I thought the rollers must be (a) shiny and smooth and (b) hot. No? Anyway, this is boring. I have only skimmed to the Cs, and think I can safely say that the value of this thing is patchy. It appears that the technical printing terms are correct (but that may just mean that I do not know what is correct). But when it comes to type, lots of really silly stuff. And page layout fares no better. Now it is not necessary in these days for a printing glossary to cover composition and layout (most printers just print what they get). But then why not omit those terms? Never mind. Grump. :: __________________ :: |
