Default Adobe CS2 de/re-activation process

After moaning for days at the whole prospect of de-activating and then re-activating Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, et al, I found the process — though lengthy — went pretty smoothly.

There were some almost glitches. I had de-activated but not deleted the files from my old boot volume. So when I started to install I discovered that the installer was going to leave the apps on the old drive (which is slated for demolition at some point). So I backed out, deleted all the files (they provide a list that is almost accurate), and then emptied the trash.

Then the install went well.

However, it took a long time, and was basically unpleasant in concept and in reality. I guess it is the sort of thing that a vendor without competition can and will do, however. Way I hear it, this does not deter pirates; but it certainly inconviences those of us who pay cold hard cash.

But oh, well. It is done. Now if I can get Fontographer set up, I think most of this messy process is done.

You are allowed two activations per licence. Unless you had used the second elsewhere, I would have conducted the activation, and then deactivated the old version.

The other trick is to do it during daytime hours, on a weekday, in case you need phone support, as they are only available during working hours.

Glad it all worked out for you. (Does FOG work on the newer Macs? I thought it was an ancient program that hadn't been updated.)

I am saving that for my laptop, once I persuade Airport to work again.

Sure. I was using 4.1.5 in Classic for a long time, but when Adobe acquired Macromedia, the latter sold Fontographer to the FontLab people, who rather promptly released an OS X version which they have updated a couple of times (now at 4.7.3).

They are planning a major rewrite and release for both platforms. They say they want to integrate Fontographer into their product line, and are also borrowing some features of FOG for FontLab.

Fortunately, this new FOG works pretty much as it always did, so there is little to learn. I have FontLab, but really hate the interface — I am more an artist than a techie — so have not mastered it. But most fonts go through FontLab these days, as it has more capable technical features, can work with OpenType (which FOG never heard of), has better multiple master functions, hinting, and other trick.

Font Lab is on my list. They have an educators discount but it is still a bit out of my reach.
