Whether (or how well) it works from a .gif file depends on the size and suitability of the artwork. Favicons are just 16X16 pixels, and it can be really hard to get an image that “reads” well at that size.

I used IrfanView to convert the small GIF file to an ICO file. I acquired IrfanView a long time ago, a utility I use only on rare occasions, but this was one of them. I don't know who or from where it was recommended that I download IrfanView, or when, but I am certainly glad I did. It might have even been upon your suggestion from the old CS DTP Forum.

Under Linux use `gimp` to load the *.gif and save it as *.ico?
