Paint Shop Pro 6.0 doesn't do SVG, so I am looking for a way to convert GIF or JPG images to SVG format. I have downloaded Inkscape, but have not yet installed it. What is the easiest way? (Must be free or cheap!)

(Must be free or cheap!)I believe Photoshop Elements will do it (this article (http://designer-info.com/Writing/svg_format.htm) explains how).

I see many sources at $50 to $60 on the web. Not free, but useful. It seems to do most of what most of us need from Photoshop.

Alternatively, there are open source solutions. This page (http://delineate.sourceforge.net/installation.html) tells a way to convert to SVG with Windows and some free software and a bit of messing around with Java.

And I found a free Windows utility, SVG Factory (http://www.svgfactory.com/).

Guess you have several choices.

Inkscape comes with Potrace installed - which is very good at converting images to SVG files. It takes a bit of trial and error to get the best out of and like Akvis Sketch it needs the right kind of image to start with.

It's free and you already got it, so it meets your requirements!:)

Attached is an example of what can be done. In this case I only kept two of the original eight layers (and changed colour on them as well), but you can use more layers to get a more 'realistic' end result.
