Judy Russell fulfilled a life-long dream last Friday by seeing and photographing the northern lights in Fairbanks, Alaska. You can view the dramatic slide show here (http://photos.jgrussell.com/gallery/7692266_aNUK2/1/#497704338_AiG57-A-LB).
It was minus-28° F. You can read Judy’s comments about the weather and taking the photos on Tapcis in the “Cold. Cold cold cold cold cold… (http://tapcis.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7251)” thread.

They are wonderful photos, and they put on a good display for her.

Beautiful, KT, really beautiful. I'd love to go there one day <sigh...>If you look at the Tapcis thread, Sid found some other photos of the northern lights from above (i.e., from space) that are even more fabulous. But her shots, especially as a slide show, are beautiful.
I grew up with the lights (and with earthquakes and volcanoes) — didn’t know everyone didn’t get these things. Jack has seen the lights too, in Vermont. Do they show up anywhere in Europe? Must, if you go far enough north.

KT:
Do they show up anywhere in Europe? In Great Britain, certainly, though in Scotland mostly, in southern England occasionally.
Do they show up anywhere in Europe? Must, if you go far enough north.I recall seeing the Aurora Australis once, as a child in the subtropics! The colours were different, however, being red to orange, if my memory serves me correctly. Maybe one of our New Zealand or Tasmanian members can refresh my memory on the colours.

They have special tours in Alaska just for aurora-viewing.
The tours are HUGELY popular with the Japanese, or so I've read.
Shorter trip for most of them than for most of us in Canada and the US, I guess. And livelier than moon-viewing.

Jack has seen the lights too, in Vermont.
I've seen them many times. Sometimes they don't amount to much except a glow in the sky. Other times they can be almost frightening, as their eerie colors bounce all over the sky.
Judy's pictures were more spectacular than what we usually get. But -28F? If we have Northern Lights when it's that cold, I look at them through a window in our darkened bathroom.<g>
