The IPTC (http://www.iptc.org/IPTC4XMP/) has information about its Metadata, but I find their web site to be a bit more technical than I am able to comprehend. I see that Irfanview versions 4.20 and later (he is at 4.23 currently) can add IPTC data to digital photos I have on my hard drive.

If I upload a photo to the DTP forum with IPTC metadata, can others see that data?

Having uploaded, can others download the image and change the metadata?

IPTC = International Press Telecommunications Council. Their website only gives the name in an image, preventing the viewer from copying the name except by reading with the human eye and typing again.

Some applications can read (and write) the IPTC metadata, and others read just the EXIF or nothing at all - so the answer is, it all depends! (I use ACDsee which can set this info, and PSP which can't.)

It's typically used by higher-end stock photo applications for keywording, copyright info, descriptions, usage rights etc.

To answer your questions directly:

If others have software that allows viewing IPTC metadata, then yes, they can view it. Likewise, if their software allows editing it, then they can edit it.
