View Full Version : 1and1 for domain registration?

I currently have my domain registered with myhosting.com but I've always been unhappy that they don't allow private domain registration and my renewal is due soon so I'm looking for someplace else for my registration--I use United Hosting as my host and I'd transfer the registration to them but as I remember it was a bit pricey.
1and1.com usually runs a number of ad pages in Maximum PC and normally, I just skip those pages but for some reason, I was looking at their ad pages more closely in this month's issue and discovered they do registration for $6.99/year (a bit less than myhosting.com) and they offer private registration.
I did look at GoDaddy a number of months ago but it annoys me that GoDaddy supports parked domain with spam links.
Has anyone got an opinion on 1and1.com???

Not for domain registration per se, but 1&1 was the first site we tried when we moved DTP Forum from CompuServe. I semi-remember that they did register the domain but I have no clear impression of that part of the transaction, but all in all, it was not a nice experience. I see many complaints about them as well, though it has been years since I had any first-hand experience of my own. I would never consider them for hosting.
But that was hosting, and domain registrations are different. On the other hand, do you know what they do with parked domains?
Instead of parking on GoDaddy, you can have unused domains redirect to another domain that is active where you can set up your own “parked” page. Just a thought.

Exactly....

Well...let me put it this way...for the work I do for companywhoshallnobenamed, pages flagged as spam and which happen to be parked domains are GoDadaddy sites 99% of the time--these are different from an "ordinary" parked domains in that they are active pages that are nothing but spam ads. I hate them...

I only own one domain...I know...I live a very deprived life...'-}}

I'd steer clear of 1&1 - sell 'em cheap, pack 'em in and don't provide support.......
I'd steer clear of 1&1 - sell 'em cheap, pack 'em in and don't provide support.......Is that for hosting, or domain registration? The "pack 'em in" seems to indicate hosting with an overselling tendency.

Seems like in everything they do. A new client just changed their domain registrar to 1&1 - who then, with no reference to the client, changed the nameservers to their own. Client then had to navigate their website to eventnually find the page to change ns back to the right ones. In the interim 1&1 got free advertising.
They also have a good affiliate payout for new signups. Perhaps I should start carrying their banner ads on my sites.

You can always point your domain at a nonexistent server. Or, you can pay GoDaddy an extra monthly fee (http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/park/landing.asp?ci=8997) for the honor of them sharing the revenue from your domain with you.
BTW, what I think a better way would be for them to charge nothing extra, but set a threshold that must be crossed before they share fees. This saves them extra bookkeeping for not enough money, and prevents the customer from losing money if there are not enough clicks.

Thanks for the link though...'-}}

I'm surprised by our comment Kelvyn. We use 1and1 for hosting and have two dedicated servers with them. I fanthing goes wrong, my business partner reports they are responsive with service. Maybe because we pay more, being business servers?

Their high-end business service does seem to be OK, and must have priority support.
The problem I see is that they advertise heavily their £2/month hosting service to attract custom. But if you need PHP and MySQL then the package needed is around £10/month - however, all these cheap packages do not qualify for "Server space priority" - so these "cheap site" servers are certain to be overloaded.
I have had previous issues with 1&1 where the client had to go through hoops to get the IPSTAG on their domain changed. This is a simple procedure and takes about 20 seconds, but on one occasion it took 10 days before they got around to doing this & releasing the domain so that the client's new site could go live. I believe this has now got better, and needed to...

Ah, can't comment on their domain handling. I have my domains on UKReg (Fasthosts). I don't usually have any problems there…
