Have you written to a book author? Did you get a reply? Just curious.

I have been thinking about writing to some non-fiction book authors, either to thank them for an informative and well written book, or to ask about some issue which arose from my reading. I have never done this, so I wonder if anyone here in the forum has tried it.

And another man in this forum who said that he was writing. In both cases they sent me a copy when it was published which was very nice.

I have third, or is it fourth cousin who wrote a self-published book called Rakula, and she sent five copies hoping I would sell some. I regret that they are still on my shelf.

And I walk my dog with a man and commented in person on his book. I regret I cannot remember the name of the book or the subject.

I e-mailed a short and simple thank you to the author of the leading minority position on the Greek NT. He put me on his e-mailing list to receive regular updates on his work. It's amazing -- I'll have knowledge that extremely few people have. I received one this morning, an analysis of a particular family of manuscripts.

On that First Amendment book I cited recently, I wrote to the author noting I could not find earlier volumes of his work and asking for help on locating them. I set out my motive for research, very similar to his objectives in writing. No response.

Much of the time passing fiction I read contains boilerplate (almost identical so from the agent or publisher) on not writing to them because it will take months to reach them via the agent/publisher and won't be answered but to feel free to email them and it will be answered. Lawrence Block is one who comes to mind (Matt Scudder novels etc) who also has a website although he closed the Forum that was there.
