View Full Version : New computer setup really a pain

I decided to set up my new iMac from scratch to avoid inheriting ailments and junk from my old one. What an ordeal!
Decided to get new printer drivers; the HP site makes you work hard to find anything, especially for older printers, but I finally got the two drivers I needed. But the installer wants to put them in a place neither they nor I have permission to go. So I went to my old Mac, figured out where they were there, and put them there in the new one. Time lost: 1.15 hour.
Then it couldn’t find either printer. I found the IP address of the HP Color LaserJet 2605 and entered that in the setup utility, and then that worked. Once anyway. But the old LJ 5000 is not shown at all on the network, even though it is plugged into the same switch as the other computers, which show up fine. So I dug out the manual and see that I need to print a configuration page. Later, I guess.
Anyway, just a minor grumble. I have the weekend to spend on this. May need every minute of it, too!
I have other questions; will ask them in appropriate places.

Go to www.youtube.com
Type this into the search box:
vista vs mac
Pick "Get a Mac - Vista vs Mac - Security"
One of Apple's ads - probably the funniest in the series.

I presume you are directing us to the clip showing a young man that badly needs a haircut and with his shirt hanging out & two shady-looking characters (the taller one would be one of the mob, if he were better dressed). It might have been good with sound. I wonder which ones chose a Macintosh.

Hey, there's even an edited one that compares the same commericals as run in US, UK and Japan.

This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaIUkwPybtM) is my favourite so far.

Me too -- though so far I've not had too many problems. The HP2605 installed with no problem from the original disc and most other installs are OK -- though I've not tried much yet.
I can't get anything off the old machine as I don't have a spare monitor or keyboard, So I've ordered a new Apple Bluetooth keyboard and 20-inch cinema display. That should give me something to play with next week.:)

That should give me something to play with next week.:)Look at Chicken of the VNC (http://www.geekspiff.com/software/cotvnc/). It is an open source (i.e., free) utility, described this way:
Chicken of the VNC is a fast, lightweight VNC client for Mac OS X. A VNC client allows one to display and interact with a remote computer screen. In other words, you can use Chicken of the VNC to interact with a remote computer as though it's right next to you.
I find it a tad annoying — it isn’t speedy. But it does let you look through old folders and files right on your new desktop, de-activate Adobe apps, and so on. You cannot copy directly from it, however.
You can also use your network to set up copies of the old folders on the new Mac. Then all you need to do it drag/copy into the new hard drive. (Unfortunately, I found many volumes did not copy — including the old boot drive. I think I know why; will be working on that today.)

Chicken of the VNC ... too funny.
I can imagine a host of other utilities to go along with it.
VNCdog. AVNCDVNC. VNCLegs. VNCuVNCme.
Aside ... I was totally mystified when our first Japanese student asked us to get him some "sea chicken" at the grocery store. Finally ...
... sea chicken ...
... chicken of the sea ...
... charlie th.... TUNA. He wants canned TUNA.
Or in Japanese, "shi chiken"

I must be one of the few people who likes their Pc (I came from 3d background), I only use a mac at work, but I don't mind either I've found good points and bad about both but I'd say I prefer my Pc because I built it myself and it was cheap but good.

Chicken of the VNC ... too funny. But I must say that it shares the transparency and ease of use of other networking or VNC apps: i.e., there isn’t any. :(

Oh, my — that is good. And there was another video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkeC7HpsHxo&NR=1) listed there that I found interesting. I don't know how I missed hearing about that in the news.
