I know this is bit of a cheek but I'm just learning to typeset brochures (complete newbie). I am unsure they best way in having seperate text boxes for certain things or trying to keep everything in one text box etc..The thing is i was wondering if anyone has some brochure examples in quark or knows where I can get some examples. I just want to look at the make up so I can get an understanding of the best way to work. Ive got a big font library so I shouldnt have to worry to much about fonts..
please help!

I'm just learning to typeset brochures (complete newbie). I am unsure they best way in having seperate text boxes for certain things or trying to keep everything in one text box etc. When possible it is best to use a single text box and use the controls in the software to control placement and spacing of the type.
One advantage of working this way is that everything in that page, column, or side of the brochure will then reference the same margins — you won’t get cockeyed bits of type because one box or another is a different width or not centered in its column.
This is not an issue unique to XPress; I was recently asked to fix a brochure done in PageMaker for a friend. Every bit of type was in a separate piece. Nothing lined up. To make things worse, whoever made the file had not used stylesheets so the leading and spacing were inconsistent from place to place in the brochure.
It is a bit of work to learn how to use DTP software, but once you understand the principles, many tasks become easier, almost automatic.
Good luck in your project.

Try searching (in Google or whatever) for "Quark templates" (or something like that). You'll probably be able to find some free templates to download.

well its more of an idea how people work when it comes to setting large brochures? Its just a good way to see well structured master pages and styles

The only XPress books I remember are pretty old by now, but most do recommend better approaches to the work process.
Brad Walrod’s QuarkXPress Unleashed, or any of several books on XPress by David Blatner should have good information on this.

I've been looking at books on amazon and David Blatner book seems the best one to choose from, I need a book which explains the best approach rather than just showing what things do.

(Those books drive me crazy — no one really needs much help to click around in menus!)
The book should tell you how to create a document of the size you need, with margins and other details tailored to your format and design; how to set up and define styles; how to set the H&Js; how to arrange text and picture boxes on the page; and that sort of stuff.

I bought the book the other day and I find it very informative. The total number of pages is about 900 pages so there is loads to read.

Brad Walrod’s QuarkXPress Unleashed,
Brad's book is probably dated, but I think the section on search and replace tricks is priceless. (and worthwhile even with other programs).
