If you are not happy with the way the Adobe plug-in works to show PDFs in Safari, Firefox, Mozilla, et al, you can get a free third-party plug-in from Schubert|it (http://www.schubert-it.com/pluginpdf/) that takes advantage of the OS X Quartz technology.

It enables you to view a PDF in a browser before downloading it, and supports most of the normal viewing and printing functions by means of some icons just above the page(s). If you click on the first of these, the PDF opens quickly in Acrobat itself (if it is open, as mine was; otherwise it will let you choose it and then it will open). But you can save to disk, print, show the TOC, choose single, facing, or continuous pages, zoom, and rotate within the plug-in.

It is certainly faster on my system than the Adobe plug-in.

This requires OS X 10.3 or higher. It is free for personal or non-profit use; otherwise, for $69 you can have a site license for all computers in your organization within a 5-mile perimeter.

(Macintouch (http://www.schubert-it.com/pluginpdf/) tipped me off on this. The discussion there also explains why Safari no longer opens PDFs, with a workaround. This plug-in may still be better, however.)

Your Macintouch link goes to Shubert-it.com. Is that the same thing? I was looking for the discussion about Safari and PDF.

Try this link to the Macintouch discussion of PDF and Safari (http://www.macintouch.com/acrobat7.html). You will have to scroll a bit.

Found it, thanks! And realized I was running a very old version of Safari. Even thought I had downloaded the latest version, the installer had put it in a new location and left my older version in place (which my alias pointed to). I've updated Safari and have now successfully looked at a PDF file in the browser (which I had not been able to do for a while on this computer).
