If you are not happy with the way the Adobe plug-in works to show PDFs in Safari, Firefox, Mozilla, et al, you can get a free third-party plug-in from Schubert|it (http://www.schubert-it.com/pluginpdf/) that takes advantage of the OS X Quartz technology.
It enables you to view a PDF in a browser before downloading it, and supports most of the normal viewing and printing functions by means of some icons just above the page(s). If you click on the first of these, the PDF opens quickly in Acrobat itself (if it is open, as mine was; otherwise it will let you choose it and then it will open). But you can save to disk, print, show the TOC, choose single, facing, or continuous pages, zoom, and rotate within the plug-in.
It is certainly faster on my system than the Adobe plug-in.
This requires OS X 10.3 or higher. It is free for personal or non-profit use; otherwise, for $69 you can have a site license for all computers in your organization within a 5-mile perimeter.
