What are the minimum and ideal desk sizes (depth) for a 23 or 24" LCD monitor? Is a 24" deep desk big enough to push the monitor back sufficiently?

I have a very small room (about 9' x 10') and I need to fit two workstations plus have room for 3 printers, copier, scanner, fax, etc. I'm space constrained :)

I have a very small room (about 9' x 10') and I need to fit two workstations plus have room for 3 printers, copier, scanner, fax, etc. I'm space constrained :)Yikes! Have you considered the equivalent of bunk beds? <g>

The nice thing about LCDs is thinness. Including its supporting bracket, mine (a 22-inch Apple LCD) takes up 6 or 7 inches of depth on the desk (at the bracket — there is a lot of space around that). I have the monitor pushed back about 15 inches, and routinely have stacks of books and papers in front. There is room in the back for hard drives and other assorted junk. My desk measures 25 inches in depth, and has a keyboard shelf hung beneath it.

To use this, I sit back about a foot and a half (making the eye to screen distance roughly 24 to 30 inches). But this means my chair protrudes quite a bit from the front of the desk, something you probably need to consider. (You don’t want to place two workstations with people back to back, for example. Or in the only access aisle.)

Hope that helps in your thinking.

cirquelle: Is a 24" deep desk big enough to push the monitor back sufficiently?I don't have a LCD monitor as I'm still using my old 19" CRT but from what I have seen of them, I'd say that a 24" deep desk would be more than sufficient...

My current desk setup is a 7' x 36" 3/4" red oak board over 2 wide elfa draw thingies (like that technical description...'-}}) and I've decided to replace this setup with 2 adjustable height tables at right angles to each other...

One is from Office Depot and is 48"x30" (http://www.officedepot.com/textSearch.do?uniqueSearchFlag=true&Ntt=398248&x=42&y=13) and Staples also carries one the same size (http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StaplesProductDisplay?prodCatType=2&storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&productId=13487&cmArea=SC2:CG39:CL142481:SS950335) but with a grey top

and Office Depot also has one that is 48"x24" (http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?level=SK&id=331225&N=1000000205+10324&An=browse) and one that is 36"x20" (http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?level=SK&id=398230&x=43&Ntt=Studio%20RTA&y=10&uniqueSearchFlag=true&An=text)

I haven't quite decided on which place I will order from but I will probably be getting them from Office Depot as I have a discount coupon with them...

Hope that helps...

Yeah, I need bunk desks <g>

I wasn't planning to use a keyboard shelf. I tend to move my keyboard around and thought it might be too restrictive. So with the keyboard on the desk, I don't think I could get 24 to 30 inches from eye to monitor with a 24" desk.

Only one person in the room at any given time so the other considerations are not a factor.

See my reply to Terrie for what I'm currently looking at.

I think I know what those Elfa draw thingies are. I was looking at an Elfa desk (54"x24") at the Container Store that you could support with them or with legs. I liked the legs better but all four of the display models were very wobbly.

I really wanted two L-shaped desks, but there is no way I can fit them into such a small space given all the other stuff.

I'm currently waffling between two desks at www.daniafurniture.com. I can't find a link to the exact models, but one is a 43.5"x43.5" corner piece which I would butt up against a 31.5" return on one side of the room. On the other side I could only fit the corner piece.

The other is a 55"x(31.5"/19") desk. It's wider on one end and curves towards the narrower end. The proportions are better for the smaller room, but it means I'd have less space to push the monitor back. From front edge where I'd sit to the back left corner point is about 24". Both of these desks are venge color (a very dark brown-black).

These are not really L-shaped desks but sort of give the illusion that they are. I wish I could find a picture.

My computer room has an IKEA desk that wraps around to one side. The part with the two monitors is 30" deep. Only the side with the big laser printer and the typewriter is 24" deep. I think that a larger desk is needed for computer use.

So with the keyboard on the desk, I don't think I could get 24 to 30 inches from eye to monitor with a 24" desk.If I pushed my monitor to the back of the desk, I could get 24" easy; not sure about 30".

You might want to go to a computer store and actually measure the depth required for the monitor(s) you are considering.

I always used to have L-shaped desks, but here I sit against a long wall in a narrow room, so just have L-shaped piles (books perched on the wastebasket and, right now, a pile cunningly balanced on top of a Kleenex box standing on end). You’re making me think about rearranging things here.

I have Anthro (http://www.anthro.com/index.aspx) computer furniture, btw: endlessly expandable and adjustable. I have an AnthroCart table, but the FIT System pieces are smaller. You can always add a side table (and other stuff).

Not to everyone’s taste but I am very happy with my table.

My original desks were constructed by a friend from two retired doors - one 80" x 30", the other 50" x 30" so they would work nicely side-by-side or in a corner. I was using them in a 10x12 room.

My current desk is a built-in 30" deep U-shaped work surface. I also note that the surface of my desktops is 26" above the floor - comfortable for my legs and a measurement you may wish to determine independently.

My (19" LCD) monitor is 16" from the front of my desk with keyboard (and wrist rest) in front letting me sit comfortably 24-26" from the screen. The glasses I wear at my computer are for a (roughly) 24" viewing distance.

A desk only 24" deep is (IMO) insufficient depth for comfortable use of both monitor and keyboard. That said there is at least 6" more depth behind the monitor so I could probably work with that but I've found the lesser depth "uncomfortable" as other materials on the desk tend to feel more "crowded".

I liked the legs better but all four of the display models were very wobbly. My problem with the Container Store solutions is that none of their desktops were deep enough--I wanted 30-36"--but at the time, I thought the elfa drawers would work well and they have but it's a pain to try and move this setup since the desktop is just sitting on top of the elfa drawers...

The other problem I have is that I'm short--5'1"--and I find regular desks too high for typing on my keyboard (and I've never cared for those keyboard drawers) so that's why when I disovered the adjustable height tables, I thought they would work better for me.

As I mentioned, my current desktop is 84" (7') and so when I was looking at these tables, I wanted to be at or under 84" long and the 48"x30" + either the 48"x24" (making the desk area 72" (48 + 24) long) or the 36"x20" (making the desk area 68" (48 + 20) long) would work. It's just a question of how long I want the short edge of the "L" to be and I haven't quite decided yet.

I'm also planning on getting a small rolling filing cabinet--maybe one where the top drawer is not for files--that will fit under one of the tables.

I think this set up will work better than a regular desk and it's more open so I think the space will look less crowded--my den is about 10'x13' and has a rather nice window and I've set the desk to face that...

To give you an idea of what's currently on my desk--from left to right: Epson flatbed scanner; Minolta slide scanner (it's about 6" wide); my 19" CRT which sits at an angle with my keyboard in front of it; a theoretically open space ('-}}) but it has my cable modem, my cup warmer a cup with pencils and pens and stuff and in front of all that is my mouse pad; my HP6PM laser printer which I can reach without having to get out of my chair and in front of the printer is my drawing tablet with a bunch of stuff on top of it that I shift when I want to use my tablet (I use it in my lap)...

The Dania stuff is quite nice but more money that I want to spend--the tables I want will be about $200 or so for both...
